Crochet button pattern

Make your own buttons!
You can make your own buttons using only yarn, once you get the hang of it they are quick to do. They can then be used for many craft projects, accessories, decorations etc. I have made hair pins and brooches from them in the past.

For a smaller button, use a small hook and lightweight yarn. If a larger button is needed, use a larger hook and heavier yarn. For these I used a double knit/worsted weight yarn and a 4.5 mm crochet hook.

Crochet Button Pattern

Make a slip loop/magic ring, leaving a long tail (approx 9").

Rnd1: CH 1, Make 8 SC in to the ring, join with a SL ST. Pull the tail to close the ring.

Rnd2: CH 1, 2 SC in each ST around, join with SL ST.

Rnd3: CH 1, 1 SC in each ST around, join with SL ST.

Rnd4: (decrease round) DEC repeat around.

Rnd5: Continue to decrease until button shape forms and hole is closed, join with SL ST
Leaving a tail, cut yarn and fasten off.

Using crochet hook poke one tail into the button to stuff it. Use the other tail to attach to garments (or cut off if not needed)

NOTE: This pattern is in US crochet stitch terms (as when I taught myself crochet I accidentally learnt the US names instead of UK terms and so just stuck with them) So if you are used to UK terms there is a helpful conversion chart here

Enjoy!

  1. These are so pretty! I only learnt to crochet over summer, and haven't done anything but granny squares yet - think I'm finally going to have to move on though because I want to give these a try!

    Thank you!!

  8. Sweeeet page. Very nice little button pattern, too. Your presentation is attractive, clear, and simple. I so appreciate that! I've made some pretty complicated heirloom buttons, and am so happy to have a simple and quick pattern to go to. Thank You!
